Name: Shaakira Shabazz
Years in the Wellness/Beauty Industry:
2 years as an Esthetician
Most Memorable Tip (monetary, gift or advice):
I had a client who was 9 months pregnant and ready to give birth. She was difficult when she first came in. I wanted to make sure she had a good experience. When her facial was over she told me that was the first time she was relaxed since she got pregnant. That boosted my confidence.
How did you choose a career in the Wellness industry?
I knew I always wanted to work with people. My grandmother put the bug in my ear since she was an Esthetician. I knew the environment was relaxing. I wanted to help people feel better and pay it forward.
Greatest reward of doing the work?
The fact that I started so young, at 20 years old, and have been able to start a rewarding career quickly.
Top two things you wish or would like to change in the industry?
First of all, I would change the pay structure. Some mangers and businesses expect high quality work but are not wiling to pay for it. They also treat employees as if they are not human without needs for breaks. Also, I would like more managers to understand what we do in the treatment room and what are skills are in relationship to our jobs.
Who is your Mentor and why?
My father taught me the importance of hard work and determination. He is ambitious and driven. He taught me not to settle. Also, my grandmother, she is a spa professional and she gives me great feedback. She loves to “critique” my facials offering suggestions to improve my hands-on skills.
