Name: Ashley Penaflore
Years in the Wellness/Beauty Industry:
3 years as a Massage Therapist licensed in Florida and Louisiana. My long-term goal is to become a Spa Director/Manager. You can learn a lot from different experiences in this industry. Taking each lesson with you to the next step, like becoming a lead therapist and then to reach my goal of managing my own spa.
Most Memorable Tip:
My most memorable trip was a gift from a regular client in Florida. They were a couple I saw bi-monthly for massages. They gave me a box of seasoned blue crabs. I took it to my grandparents for the big feast. I still keep in touch with him to today.
How did you choose a career in the Wellness industry?
I was a drawn to the importance of massage therapy I was in a car accident at the age of 13 and massage helped me physically to recover. It also helps me in the management of my pain without using medication.
Greatest reward of doing the work?
My greatest reward in my career so far has been taking care of people who take care of people. Particularly nurses. They are so thankful and appreciative and I find that really rewarding
Top two things you wish or would like to change in the industry?
Two things I would change about our industry are. One is to bring an awareness of self-care to therapist and technicians in the industry. This would help to avoid injury and also lengthen the life of our careers. Secondly, I would increase the awareness and knowledge regarding deep tissue massage techniques and expectations for the guest and the therapist.
Who is your Mentor and why?
My mentors are: first, a massage therapy instructor of mine, Patty Lucas. She was never judgmental and always patient. She had high expectations for us and I really appreciated that. She is still a guide for me today with my questions always sharing options and suggestions.
Secondly Alexander Weeks is a mentor to me. We met when I was 20 and she is very encouraging and uplifting and nonjudgmental. She is an influence on my life through shared life experiences. She freely shares her wisdom and honesty with me. I really appreciate that about her.
