Name: Crystal Green
Years in the Wellness/Beauty Industry:
10 years as a Licensed Massage Therapist
Most Memorable Tip (monetary, gift or advice):
My most memorable tip was from a guest who started singing the Beyoncé song "Put a ring on it.” He was super funny. Also, he left me a $97.50 tip. He was down to earth. He really appreciated my massage especially since he hadn’t had one in a long time.
How did you choose a career in the Wellness industry?
I kind of just fell into massage. I was getting ready to go to college but I had a change in plans. Then, I saw a TV commercial for a massage school. I went to that school for a tour. I thought it was great because they had business classes, too. Since business was what I was planning to study in college.
Greatest reward of doing the work?
The greatest reward of the work for me is that I love my clients. And I get to meet new people all the time. I once had a client who is an amputee. He shared his story of seeing the “white light.” It was unlike any other experience. Meeting new people like that helps me to change my life and be more open. It is great to have a career that makes you a more open person.
Top two things you wish or would like to change in the industry?
The two things I would change about the industry are: First of all, the treatment of employees. I don't like being treated like a machine. I feel there is a lack of fairness and humanity. Sometimes employers misrepresent the job they are offering. Then when you get there and start working it's a disconnected experience from the start. Secondly, I would work with the owners and managers. Sometimes it feels like they do not know what we do. Because of this lack of awareness, they treat us like a commodity rather than human beings with needs.
